Energy Vault Holdings is starting the commissioning process for its first energy storage system that generates electricity using gravity.
- Project will be connected to grid in 4Q, co. says in emailed statement
- Storage system built near wind farm outside Shanghai will be able to deliver as much as 25 megawatts of power for four hours
- System uses electric motors to elevate heavy blocks that weigh as much as 35 tons. That creates potential energy that can be converted later into electricity when they’re lowered to the ground
